Know Your Ophthalmic Equipment: Autorefractokeratometer
An Autorefractokeratometer (ARK) is an advanced eye-testing instrument that helps your ophthalmologist accurately measure your eye's refractive error (eye power) and the curvature of your cornea. It provides an initial estimate of whether you are short-sighted (myopia), long-sighted (hyperopia), or have astigmatism. The keratometry function also measures the shape of the cornea, which is especially important for contact lens fitting, cataract surgery planning, and refractive procedures such as LASIK.
The test is quick, painless, and takes only a few seconds. You simply look at a target inside the machine while it performs the measurements automatically. Although it gives valuable information, the ARK does not replace a comprehensive eye examination or the final spectacle prescription, which is confirmed by your ophthalmologist after additional tests.
