Styes in adults are usually caused by a bacterial infection affecting the oil glands or hair follicles near the eyelashes. The most common bacteria responsible is Staphylococcus. Adults may develop styes due to poor eyelid hygiene, touching or rubbing the eyes with dirty hands, stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, or using old eye makeup. Conditions like blepharitis, dandruff, dry eyes, diabetes, and rosacea can also increase the risk of repeated styes. Contact lens users who do not clean their lenses properly are more prone to infections. Symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, watering, and a small pus-filled bump on the eyelid. Warm compresses can help relieve discomfort, but persistent or recurrent styes should be examined by an eye specialist. At Focus Eye Clinic, Dr Mohini Modak offers expert care for styes and eyelid infections. For appointments call 02235048608 / 8097410018.
